- 3rd PRIZE IN SARP COMPETITION for the city stadium and sports hall in KATOWICEBasic design assumptionsDue to the park-like nature of the planned location of the stadium, a soft-shaped body was chosen, which will harmoniously fit into the context of the place. Hence the rounded form of the stadium's corners and the circular plan of the sports and entertainment hall. According to the terms of the competition, both parts of the facility (the stadium and the hall) were integrated in one building so that they could effectively share some of their functions. The main hall, sports and training facilities, media services and administrative functions have been combined in a most economical way, assuming that the events in the hall and the stadium will not be held simultaneously. For functional reasons, the cubature objects were concentrated mainly around the west stand of the stadium. This is rationally justified by the specificity of the stadium function: in order to ensure the best possible visibility at the events usually organized in the second half of the day, the VIP stands are usually located on the west side, and the players' changing rooms and all the necessary infrastructure for functional reasons are located under this stand. In order to optimize communication between the two functions of the facility, the hall was connected to the western stand of the stadium. The spaces created at the junction of both objects were used to arrange the remaining accompanying functions required in the functional and spatial program of the competition. At the same time, efforts were made to keep both objects legibly separate. This is served by the entrance halls - atriums open to the full height of the building. This will allow the facility to be managed more efficiently in the future. The remaining parts of the building on the east, north and south sides are mostly open. Small cubature facilities containing sanitary and gastronomic facilities of individual sectors are evenly distributed around the perimeter under the stands. The entire building is unified with an openwork, linear facade made of mesh panels, which in their organic form also refer to the surrounding greenery and emphasize the dynamism associated with the sports function. The façade panels are designed so that their inner side ("lining") is yellow. This color was supplemented with black finishing elements, which, combined with the surrounding greenery and the natural color of the turf, is a reference to the club colors of the GKS Katowice team. The design also takes into account the attractiveness of the stadium shape for people traveling along the nearby motorway. The hyperbolic shape of the panels, the use of color and the oval form of the building change the appearance of the object from different angles, which makes an intriguing impression and catches the eye.
